Dr. Donna S. Lundy is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the U. of Miami School of Medicine.  She is also Co-Director of the Vocal Disorders Laboratory.  Her clinicdal practice is limited to the management of individualos with head and neck cancer, swallowing, and voice disorders.  She has published more than 20 articles in peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Christy Ludlow, PhD

Dr. Christy Ludlow is Chief of the Laryngeal and Speech Section at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

She Received her PhD from New York University and has directed a research program at the NIH for over 20 years.

She received 2005 Honors from ASHA, the 2006 Award of the American Laryngological Association and Honors of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Ludlow has over 180 publications in voice, speech and swallowing, neural control and disorders.  Her research is aimed at developing improved treatments based on understanding the neurological bases for voice, speech, and swallowing.

Understanding the Physiological Basis for Motor and Sensory Stimulation in Dysphagia

    At the conclusion of this conference the participants will:

  1. Learn how swallowing is altered by surface muscle stimulation.
  2. Learn how swallowing is altered by different types of sensory stimulation.
  3. Learn how swallowing is altered by intramuscular stimulation.
  4. Review the evidence available on the effects of sensory and muscle stimulation for the enhancement of swallowing in dysphagia.
  5. Learn about combining sensory and motor stimulation with volitional training for the neurorehabilitation of dysphagia.
